Microdiscectomy Spine Surgery

#

What is Microdiscectomy spine surgery?
Microdiscectomy, also sometimes called microdecompression or microdiskectomy, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed on patients with a herniatedlumbar disc. During this surgery, a surgeon will remove portions of the herniated disc to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve column.
The benefit of Lumbar Discectomy Surgery: The benefit of surgery is to take the pressure off the nerve and give the nerve a chance to recover. For the majority of people who undergo this operation, this means the leg and buttock symptoms improve, allowing them to return to their normal activities. The surgery may, or may not relieve your back pain.
What happens during surgery?
The surgery is perfomred under general anaesthetic. This means that you will be asleep. A tube is inserted into your throat to help you breathe. The surgery usually takes about 45 minutes. In the operating theatre you lie on your front, over an arched operating table.

The surgeon makes an incision, usually 3-5 cm long, over the lower part of your spine. The muscles are carefully moved toone side so the surgeon can see the lumbar vertebrae. A small amount of bone & ligament from the back of the spine are removed so the disc and nerve can be seen; this part is called laminotomy.Part of the nucleus is removed or the annulus is trimmed. Once the disc is no longer pressing on the nerve, the incision is closed with either stitches or clips and a sterile ressing is applied.

What is the success rate of Microdiscectomy? The success rate for a microdiscectomy spine surgery is approximately 90% to 95%. People who undergo microdiscectomy usually report significant and immediate pain relief in the arms and legs. However, this procedure may not be as effective at relieving pain in the lower back. Physical therapy combined with pain medication can often be a better option for alleviating back pain.
